- * Organic or Biodynamic Wine
Organic is a term used loosely to describe wines that are free of pesticides, herbicides, chemical fertilizers and other synthetics while necessary natural preservatives like sulfites are kept to a minimum. In the cellar, modern and traditional techniques are combined, producing the best possible wines with the fewest detrimental effects on the environment. Grapes are often picked by hand and the wine is made with minimal interference, handling, or filtration.
Biodynamic refers to an agricultural philosophy developed by Rudolf Steiner that goes above and beyond organics. In addition to the organic methods described above, this philosophy is to treat the Earth as a living being and to recognize nature's basic life forces as having an effect on the soil. Natural compost and nutrient preparations, as well as working in harmony with the cosmic cycles, bring about balance between the grapevines and the Earth. The result is a self-sustaining vineyard whose wines best express the terroir, or place in which it is grown.
